Raptor at the blueberry fields

Posted by Picasa

This Harris's Hawk is working...his owner brings him to the blueberry fields a few times each year while the berries are ripe, to keep the birds away. They would do serious damage to the blueberry crop. Just a few visits from the raptor keeps the crops safe. His owner releases him to fly over the fields and each time he returns he is rewarded with a piece of meat.

In the wild Harris's Hawk hunts cooperatively in pairs or trios. The hawks surround their prey, flush it for another to catch, or take turns chasing it.
